Restore Your Body With Mommy Makeover Surgery

Even women who lead a healthy and active lifestyle may have challenges after pregnancy, particularly changes to the breasts and abdomen. Breast feeding can cause the breasts to loosen or even appear deflated (a condition called ptsosis), while the tummy can be droopy with stretch marks or pockets of stubborn fat.

Dr. Shapiro performs mommy makeover surgery in Scottsdale, Arizona to help women reclaim their pre-pregnancy figure and self-confidence following childbirth. This set of procedures can address and even reverse many common problems women experience after pregnancy, including enlarged areolas, drooping breasts, stretch marks, loose muscles and lax skin.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

This is one of the most customizable plastic surgery procedures available because it actually combines any procedures into a complete restorative operation. A typical mommy makeover in Scottsdale & Phoenix is a series of three procedures: breast lift, tummy tuck and body contouring.

Some women choose to have additional procedures added as well, such as breast augmentation to restore volume as well as youthful position to the breasts.

Some women turn to this surgery to help them reclaim their pre-pregnancy figure and confidence, while others hope (and receive) something that is even better.

This procedure typically takes around six hours to complete, although it will depend on the specific techniques used, the procedures requested and the degree of work that will be performed. Dr. Shapiro performs this procedure under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure in Scottsdale.

Before & After Mommy Makeover

Patient is a 54-year-old very active woman who had noticed progressive droopiness and loss of superior breast volume, along with a continued inablility to improve her abdominal and hip contours with diet and exercise. She had always felt feminine with significant curves, but began to feel sloppy and unhappy with her appearance. She wanted to look more attractive in and out of clothes and was concerned about a weird looking belly button after surgery, as she had witnessed in some friends. She was a C cup breast, and wanted to maintain this relative size, and is 5’4” and weighs 148lbs.

Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a common procedure to restore the youthful position to the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding. This procedure can restore cleavage as well as self-confidence, and it may be performed using three different techniques: a crescent incision above the areola for breasts with mild sagging, a periareolar incision (around the nipples) for breasts with moderate sagging and to reduce the size of the areolas, or a full lift, which is best for breasts with severe sagging. This procedure requires an anchor-shaped incision around the areola, vertically to the breast crease, and across the crease. The incision and degree of correction will depend on the severity of sagging.

If the periareolar technique is used, the only obvious scar will be around the immediate areola, although this can be very difficult to detect. A full lift will require scars around the areola, down to the crease and inside of the breast crease. In any case, scars will fade over time and even the vertical scar can be difficult to see. Many women choose to have breast implants placed at the same time as a mastopexy. Breast augmentation along with a lift can restore not only the youthful position but improve the volume and shape of the breasts. Depending on the type of lift that is necessary, this will not require additional incisions or a longer recovery. Combining implants with a lift can often produce the best mommy makeover results.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is designed to realign the abdominal muscles after they have spread during pregnancy. This procedure also removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, including stretch marks. This procedure begins with a horizontal incision made near the pubic hairline between the hip bones. Another incision may sometimes be necessary near the belly button to remove excess skin from the upper abdomen as well. Next, the muscles are tightened into a more athletic alignment, using stitches to anchor the muscles into the fascia, or the strong connective tissue separating the muscle groups from skin and fat. After the muscles are realigned, excess fat and skin is removed and tightened for a sleeker contour. Dr. Shapiro will take care to place incisions where they will be well hidden once healed. You will be able to show off your new figure in a bikini without visible scars.

Results from a Mommy Makeover

These combined procedures are highly effective for restoring a post-pregnancy body. The breasts will be higher on the chest wall, with a youthful firmness and shape, with or without implants. Implants will produce beautiful volume in the breasts, especially at the upper poles at the top of the breasts.

The abdominal muscles will be pulled into a tight alignment and a lovely waistline will be contoured into shape.

What is the Recovery for a Mommy Makeover?

In general, this procedure requires a recovery period of 10 to 14 days. After two weeks, most patients are able to resume work and most normal activities. Strenuous activity and most exercise may be resumed after 2 to 4 weeks. Dr. Shapiro will remove any stitches at the follow-up appointment about one week after surgery. Bruising, tenderness and swelling is common and will dissipate on its own over one to two weeks. Dr. Shapiro will use a pain pump to automatically deliver medication into the bloodstream for faster relief during this recovery period. One of the main advantages to performing all three (or more) procedures at once is there is only one recovery period.

Mommy makeover results can be truly transformative, as these combined procedures can restore a woman’s post-pregnancy body. The breasts will sit higher with youthful shape and fullness, the abdominal muscles will be pulled tighter, stretch marks will be reduced and loose skin and stubborn fat deposits will be a thing of the past.

Vaser Liposuction will activate skin tightening and pull the abdomen into a flat tummy. With tighter skin and less fat, the result is always a slender and feminine outline.

Are You a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Ideal candidates for this procedure are women who want to restore their body to the contours they had prior to pregnancy and childbirth. Candidates should be at a stable weight and within 30% of their ideal weight with no plans to have additional children.

Women who want to add to their family in the future may be advised to wait and undergo surgery at a later date, as weight gain later can reverse the positive changes.
