Excess submental fat, more commonly referred to as double chin, is a frequent problem faced by both men and women. Up until recently, the only successful way to improve a puffy, unattractive double chin was through liposuction. Today, however, an exciting, innovative treatment for submental fat is available at Shapiro Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skin Klinic: Kybella.
Kybella is an injectable that offers patients a noninvasive solution to their double chin. The cutting-edge treatment takes only minutes in the office, and the final results are dramatic. After a brief series of Kybella injections, the jawline will have a smooth, tight appearance; without the risk or recovery time associated with unwanted surgery.
Kybella’s Noninvasive Fat Elimination
Shapiro Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Skin Klinic is excited to bring patients Kybella injections as an alternative to traditional liposuction. Designed to produce significant sculpting below the chin line, Kybella is the first and only injectable approved by the Food and Drug Administration to eliminate submental fat. Kybella can produce unparalleled results in areas showing moderate to severe submental fullness.
Kybella is created from Deoxycholic acid, an organic chemical found in the human body. While the fat cells are dissolved with Kybella, healthy tissues remain unharmed. Once Kybella is placed in the predetermined areas of submental fat, the body will slowly dissolve and metabolizes these cells, slowly sculpting and tightening below the chin.
This procedure is tailored to each individual patient’s unique needs. The severity of submental fat will determine the extent of correction required to obtain desired results. Compared to more traditional treatments for submental fullness, such as liposuction, Kybella offers a quick, unique, noninvasive technique for restoring a youthful appearance.
The Ideal Kybella Candidate
Anyone frustrated with the appearance of a double chin may benefit from Kybella. The ideal candidate for treatment will be in good health, have a full understanding of Kybella, and hold appropriate expectation for their results. The injectable is safe for all skin types and ethnicities. The injectable may not be right for patients with excess skin or scarring under the chin.
The Kybella Consultation
To determine if Kybella is right for you, call our office for a complimentary consultation with one of our experienced Nurse Injectors. During this appointment, the Kybella procedure will be explained in full, including the benefits and limitations of the treatment. One of our Nurse Injectors will perform a quick exam of your facial tissues and aesthetic goals will be discussed. If Kybella is determined to be the right technique for you, a personalized treatment plan will be created.
The Kybella Treatment
In a comfortable, private treatment room, a set of small injections of Kybella will be administered under the chin. The procedure will take less than 30 minutes. Most patients do not describe a Kybella treatment as painful, but for added comfort, a topical or local anesthetic will be administered.
Depending on the severity of submental fat, between two and four and infrequently up to six Kybella sessions will be required for optimal results.
The Kybella Recovery
There are no restrictions or downtime required after a Kybella treatment. Patients can return to their normal activities the same afternoon. Exercise can be resumed within 48 hours, and makeup can be worn as usual. Although some redness and minor swelling is normal, patients can expect this to mostly resolve over the first five to seven days.
Although the results from Kybella will not be immediate, they can be seen after only one to two treatments. As the fat cells are dissolved and metabolized by the body, the chin will become smooth and sculpted. The fatty tissue addressed with Kybella will not reform, making the final results permanent. Once the predetermined number of Kybella treatments have been completed, no further follow-up procedures are necessary to maintain the results.

What is Kybella?
Kybella is an innovative injectable, approved by the FDA to eliminate submental fatty tissue or the double chin.
How does Kybella work?
Kybella is created from Deoxycholic Acid, a naturally occurring molecule, that is used by the body to rid unwanted fats. As Kybella is injected into targeted areas of fatty tissue, the cells are destroyed, then safely metabolized by the body.
Am I a good candidate for Kybella?
The ideal candidate for Kybella is in overall good health, understands the treatment process, and holds realistic expectations for their results.
Does Kybella require more than one treatment?
Between two and six Kybella treatments are required for optimal results. Our Nurse Injector will determine the number of treatments needed during the consultation appointment.
What are the risks of Kybella injections?
Kybella is considered safe and effective for the treatment of submental fat. While minor bruising, swelling, and redness can be expected, these will diminish over the next week. Complications such as numbness, difficulty swallowing, and excessive bleeding are rare, but can occur.
