Intro to the Lower Facial Structure
The lower facial structure is comprised of the chin, the upper neck and the jawline. Beauty for men and women is based on balance, symmetry and proportion. When one feature is out of balance, it can make the entire face out of proportion and draw attention to the wrong area. Beauty is inherent when everything has a shape and proportion that complements all features of the face.
A beautiful woman has a curved, graceful face with a smooth chin and gentle jawline while a handsome man has a face that denotes strength with a chiseled jawline and a solid chin. If you look in the mirror and feel that your face is out of proportion or your jawline is not what you want it to be, Dr. Shapiro’s highly trained hand can create balance and symmetry. Dr. Shapiro performs chin implant surgery in Scottsdale, Arizona to help bring balance to your entire face.
If you are considering chin augmentation, please contact Dr. Shapiro’s Scottsdale office for a consultation. During the consultation, Dr. Shapiro will discuss your goals and complete an examination, while giving you the chance to view photos of prior patients. Dr. Shapiro will answer any questions you have about the procedure and give you a cost. He will discuss how your facial features work together and what you can expect from your surgery.
Neck and Jawline Procedure
Facial surgery by Dr. Shapiro will create a more balanced facial structure that is more graceful or strong than before. For the upper neck and jawline, Dr. Shapiro will use a very small amount of facial liposuction and other techniques to improve symmetry. This includes removing unnecessary fatty tissue to improve the gracefulness of a woman’s face or the strong, chiseled profile of a man’s jawline.
Soft tissue fillers or silicone facial implants may be used to improve the shape of the chin, particularly for men, who are expected to have a strong but not protrusive masculine chin.
Chin augmentation is a minimally invasive procedure that requires only a small incision hidden well beneath the chin. Once the incision is made, a pocket is made in the tissue and the implant is gently inserted. The incision will then be closed with sutures.
This procedure has a very fast recovery time with minimal post-operative bruising. Facial implants have a very long record of safe use with few complications. While complications are rare, numbness or infection may occur and require Dr. Shapiro to temporarily remove the implant.
Most patients experience just mild to moderate discomfort for one or two days. A cold compress may be used to minimize swelling, bruising and discomfort. Most patients are mobile the day after surgery, although activities may be restricted. Most patients return to work and normal activities within one week.
Are You a Candidate?
Candidates for this procedure should be in good physical health with realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. Good candidates may:
- Have a weak or receding chin and wish to improve their chin projection and jawline,
- Want to improve the contour or proportion of facial structures due to aging,
- Want to correct facial asymmetry
Further Facial Enhancement
Together with Dr. Shapiro, if an implant is determined to be the wrong way to go, enhancement of the chin and jawline may be achieved with soft tissue fillers, including Radiesse or Sculptra, an artificial tissue filler that lasts for two to five years.
Dr. Shapiro may also perform a fat grafting procedure that uses your body’s own fat cells to enhance the chin. This is a natural relocation of fat from undesirable areas such as the hips or stomach. This procedure produces results that look and feel natural. Complications are very unlikely.
Some patients may also consider jaw contouring surgery, also known as mandibular augmentation. This procedure produces a sharper jawline. Patients may choose this cosmetic procedure to correct facial trauma or a weak lower jaw structure. The implant will enhance the cheek bones and bring balance to the face.
The new jaw shape will help highlight the nose and eyes. Men typically choose a square jawline, while women tend to request a more oval-shaped face.
