Brazilian Butt Lift
This procedure, also called fat transfer to the buttocks, is named for curvy South American women. Fat transfer an produce a pleasing, full rear through a minimally invasive procedure with fast and natural results. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes between one and three hours to complete.
Fat transfer involves harvesting fat from one area of the body — typically a troublesome place like the abdomen, hips or thighs — so it may be prepared and injected into the buttocks. Fat is collected through very small incisions that are about one-quarter inch in length and well concealed. The fat will be injected in very small amounts above, below and into the gluteal muscles to produce a smooth and curved appearance while improving the tightness of the skin to naturally lift sagging and wrinkles.
A Brazilian buttocks lift results in very limited if any visible scarring. Tiny scars may be possible, which will be located either at the top of the crease at the bottom of the back, or on the crease where the buttocks meet the thighs.
This procedure has many advantages over using implants. Implants, which are usually made of silicone, may change position when they are placed in the buttocks. It is possible that the implants can become uncomfortable over time or infected, in which case they must be removed. Using the patient’s own fat also results in results that look and feel more natural, with far fewer complications. This procedure is also less invasive with a much smaller scar.
Good candidates for fat grafting to the buttocks are those who have volume loss due to age, genetics or weight loss, or those who want a more natural and less invasive means of elevating the buttocks and adding a pleasing curve.
Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery and Results
Many patients experience mild swelling and discomfort, with occasional bruising. These side effects typically resolve within a week or two. Stitches placed during the liposuction phase of the procedure will be removed during the first follow-up appointment after about a week. Most patients are able to return to work within 7 to 10 days. A special compression garment will be worn for the first month to support the new contour and help minimize swelling.
Patients should avoid exercise and strenuous exercise for about two weeks, and avoid sitting directly on the buttocks during this time. Sleeping on the side or stomach is best for the first two weeks.
This procedure produces very long-lasting results, as the transferred fat will establish a blood supply and thrive.
A surgical buttock lift, or a lipectomy, is designed for patients with severe loss of skin elasticity that has resulted in sagging skin of the buttocks. This may be due to gravity and aging, genetics or weight loss. This procedure raises and tightens the skin of the buttocks to reduce wrinkles, dimpling or sagging skin.
Good candidates for this procedure are men and women who are otherwise healthy but have lost skin elasticity in the buttock area. Candidates should be non-smokers with realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. This surgery may be combined with other cosmetic surgery procedures, such as a body lift or an abdominoplasty.
The exact procedure depends on the patient’s body shape and the amount of skin and tissue that will be removed. An incision will typically be made at the waist or just below the waist to allow excess skin and tissue to be removed. The buttock will be sutured vertically to lift it to a more youthful position while tightening the skin to correct sagging and wrinkles. In the case of a reduction, Dr. Shapiro will use liposuction to remove excess fat.
Drains are typically left in the incisions to avoid a build-up of fluid that may result in complications, such as a seroma, or a pocket of fluid beneath the skin. Recovery from this procedure generally takes 7 to 10 days. Many patients have buttocks that feel numb near the incision site, but this will pass. After surgery, patients wear a compression garment to tightly hold the skin. This reduces swelling and helps the skin tighten after surgery.
Buttock lift scars are typically well hidden by underwear or a bikini bottom.
