Introduction to the Upper Facial Structure
The upper part of the face consists of the eyebrows and forehead, where the skin tends to lose elasticity. As we age, the upper skin of the face tends to develop permanent lines that can make the face seem tired or worn.
Because there are no other features on the upper third of the face except a large expanse of skin, these lines are very apparent. Usually here in Scottsdale, Arizona, women and men over 35 start looking for this particular procedure as they age.
Your face should look how you feel, not how old the calendar tells you you are. If you feel younger than your age, but your face does not show it, a brow lift, or browplasty, may be the ideal procedure to reverse this sign of aging and restore your face to a more youthful appearance.
Why a Brow Lift?
Wrinkles are the result of many factors that wreak havoc on the skin, including decreased collagen production and sun exposure. A brow lift procedure relaxes these wrinkles to give your face a more gentle and rested appearance, rather than an angry or exhausted look that often results from forehead wrinkles.
This procedure may be performed on its own or with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as a facelift or Blepharoplasty, for a combined effect of restoring the whole face.
His: The Forehead Lift for Men
A handsome man has a strong, smooth forehead that does not look angry due to deep wrinkles or sagging eyelids. The eyebrows should run straight across the brow bone. If the eyebrows descend any farther, the eyelids are impeded and he looks tired.
Dr. Shapiro offers a customized brow lift for men to reverse signs of aging. The forehead lift will return the eyebrows to their higher position on the brow bone, but not so high that they appear feminine, while allowing the muscles of the forehead to relax for smoother skin.
Hers: The Brow Lift for Women
Women experience greater pressure to appear young and beautiful. A woman’s face should appear gentle and smooth, with eyebrows that arch above the brow bone. If the eyebrows are too low, she appears concerned, while eyebrows that are too high make her seem alarmed or excited.
A browplasty can relax the wrinkles on a woman’s forehead and restore youthful beauty.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
This type of browlift is the most commonly performed by Dr. Shapiro in Scottsdale. An endoscopic lift is designed for patients with a minimal to moderate quantity and depth of wrinkles to be corrected. This is a very reliable and time-tested procedure with predictable results.
An endoscopic forehead lift is a minimally invasive procedure that results in very little swelling or bruising. Inconspicuous incisions will be made in the scalp that are hidden in the hairline. This means very few scars will be left, and it will be difficult for even the patient to notice them. Endoscopic procedures offer a very fast recovery time. Surgical sutures are typically removed within 10 days. At this point, most patients feel comfortable socializing and returning to work and normal activities.
Open (Coronal) Brow Lift
An open or coronal browplasty is a specialized procedure designed for patients with heavy skin and/or deep wrinkles, which are more common among men. Deep wrinkles between the eyebrows and in the mid-forehead may be lifted using this technique.
As with the endoscopic procedure, the open forehead lift requires incisions placed on the top of the scalp, which means minimal scarring that is well hidden. With a larger incision, Dr. Shapiro can directly correct muscles that are responsible for the wrinkles. This procedure is more powerful with more dramatic results than an endoscopic procedure. While it is slightly more invasive, patients are typically discharged to return home after the procedure. The recovery time is about the same at ten days, and most patients experience very little swelling or bruising.
Non-Surgical Browlift
While some patients may benefit from the standard surgery, many consider a non-surgical option. Rather than manipulating and eliminating excess skin, this non-invasive procedure uses fillers to smooth the forehead.
Also known as a mini brow lift, this procedure may be tailored to best suit the needs of the patient in our Skin Klinic facility. There is no downtime.
Several dermal fillers may be used to achieve the desired results. Traditionally, Botox or very similar Dysport injections may be used to prevent the underlying muscle from performing the movements that create lines. Some patients may also benefit from long-lasting fillers like Radiesse or Sculptra. These injections fill in sunken areas to create a smooth surface texture while stimulating collagen production beneath the surface to allow your body to naturally mimic the effects of the injections.
A non-surgical forehead lift can elevate the eyebrow to make the eyes appear more open while addressing frown lines and creases in the forehead. Results are typically noticeable within a few days and results last for six to nine months, although follow-up maintenance injections can maintain these results. The treatment is very quick with minimal side effects. This procedure is best for patients with the beginning signs of aging who do not require surgical intervention.
